My New Zealand Story: Gold

5/12/2025

Picture
The year is 1862 and Mary Brogan has just made a daring decision. She will leave her home in Dunedin and travel alone to Dunstan Diggings to find her father. It has been seven years since Mary last saw her father. He was supposed to have followed Mary, her mother and her younger brother Billy from Australia to New Zealand, but he never turned up. Mary is determined to find out why. She refuses to believe that her father abandoned them. Mary has a major problem- a 13-year old girl cannot possibly travel alone and live safely among male miners. Mary decides to disguise herself as a boy called Harry Bannerman. Her disguise proves extremely effective and Mary is able to find work and live among the miners. However, many of the men she is around are unscrupulous and dangerous. They steal each other’s gold and vigilante justice is commonplace, given the lack of law enforcement. Mary finds herself involved with Jack Bloxham and George Harcourt and soon her life is in danger. However, Mary’s expedition is successful because she finds her father. He was right under her nose the whole time and she didn’t realise it. But does he have a reasonable explanation for why he failed to join his family, or did he just decide to keep the gold for himself?

A Teenage Survivor's Tale of Shipwreck and Resilience

A harrowing true story of shipwreck and survival in the unforgiving sub-Antarctic waters off New Zealand.
Thirteen-year-old Samuel signs on as a cabin boy, eager for adventure aboard a vessel bound for Sydney. But fate takes a cruel turn. On March 6, 1907, the barque Dundonald crashes and sinks off the desolate Disappointment Island, part of the Auckland Islands group south of New Zealand.

My New Zealand Story: Stop The Tour

21/11/2025

Picture

My New Zealand Story is a series of vividly imagined accounts of life in the past ... making history come alive.

It is 1981 and Martin senses big trouble brewing at home.
The South African rugby team has been invited to tour New
Zealand. Martin’s sister, Sarah, is out to stop the tour in protest
against South Africa’s racist apartheid system. His rugby-mad
dad is equally determined that the tour should go ahead.
Martin wishes the whole thing would simply go away.
“You just fence-sit like a dumb bunny,” Sarah tells him.
But Martin would just rather not take sides.
Then a new school leads to a new friendship, and Martin is
faced with a choice. He can walk away, or he can become
involved in something that will end up being bigger than
anybody could have predicted.

Te Reo Māori: The Basics Explained

22/11/2024

Picture
The use of te reo Māori in daily New Zealand life is snowballing, as is demand for resources to make learning the language efficient and enjoyable.

This book helps answer that demand. Here in simple terms is a thorough guide to the building blocks of grammar in te reo, showing how to create phrases, sentences and paragraphs. After an introductory chapter on pronunciation and written forms of the language, 17 chapters introduce the main base words, particles and determiners that guide their use. The book employs real-life examples to illustrate how Māori grammar works day to day.

Te Reo Māori: The Basics Explained draws on David Kārena-Holmes’ decades of experience teaching and writing about Māori language. Building on his previous works, this updated and expanded approach will be an essential companion for speakers at any level.

Learn how to achieve peak performance without burning out in the process with the latest book.

We live in a constant state of overwhelm and exhaustion whilst simultaneously striving for high performance. It’s not sustainable and it’s why burnout has become so prevalent. That was before the global pandemic which exacerbates the level of change and uncertainty leaving peak performance even harder to achieve. Busyness is fashionable, we wear it like a badge of honour but it doesn’t lead to high performance. Quantity does not always mean quality and being busy does not mean we’re productive, in fact the opposite is often true.

Understand the difference between busy and productive Work smarter not harder and master the habits of high performance Understand the neuroscience behind thinking patterns and how to access a flow state Learn strategies to cultivate a more focused, clear mind. Be your best without burning out in the process Overcome overwhelm, reenergise and build resilience Improve productivity and effectiveness.
