In BriefMarie Munro is a writer and retired educator, newspaper publisher, and learning designer with a passion for storytelling. Self-publishing the Nana’s Shed Books collection of bilingual picture books is her retirement hobby, which created opportunities for four Wellington-based artists to add ‘illustrating for children’ to their resumés. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Marie Munro is a writer, an educator, a journalist, a publisher and marketer, and the author of seven bilingual picture books, including Te Wharau o Kui – Nana’s Shed, Nana’s Veggie Garden – Te Māra Kai a Kui, and her latest publication, Nana’s Electric Car – Te Motokā Hiko o Kui. From a young age, Marie wanted to write for children, but life got in the way. When she retired, in 2015, she began writing stories, in rhyming couplets, to engage with and tangibly bridge the geographical divide between herself and her non-Kiwi grandchildren. By reflecting their interests and exploits in words and illustrations she hoped to affirm, inspire and empower them, and to engage them in the New Zealand environment and culture.
The resulting collection of imaginatively believable, child-centred stories have also become firm favourites with Kiwi pre-schoolers, early readers and older children learning a second language. Marie’s other bilingual picture books include Lucas's Car – Te Waka o Lucas, Nana’s New Porch – Te Mahau Hou o Kui, Bella’s Fringe, and the first in a planned series of simple science titles, Nana’s Simple Science: Water – Te Pūtaiao Ngāwari a Nana: Wai.
Marie considers herself a facilitator and uses her skills and life experiences to support and nurture untapped talent. In 1991, as a community newspaper owner and publisher, she altered the career-trajectories of a group of unskilled and unemployed seasonal workers. Since 2015, her new hobby and facilitation activities have added ‘illustrating for children’ to the resumés of four talented artists.
